We woke early to catch the train to Nagoya to meet Yutaka, a student who stayed with my grandparents over 20 years ago. None of us had met him before and when we arrived at the train station him and his family
was waiting with a plaquard reading IMADA. His wife was holding their 9 month old baby in her arms. We made our introductions and exchanged gifts before dropping our bags in a locker and heading to Dennys for
breakfast. We chit chatted over breakfast and while their English was limited, we had a really nice time. They also insisted that they pay for breakfast because we were their guests. So generous of them. Yukata then took us to the subway and gave us some suggestions on where to go. It was a short visit but quite pleasant and we were honoured that they took the time out of their schedule for us (their baby Yuka was also super cute)
Our first stop was Nagoya castle. It had a large forested and lanscaped area around it. It rained briefly for a few minutes but then quickly stopped.
We wandered around the grounds and made our way to the castle. Adorned on the top of the 7 storey castle was a golden killer whale, the symbol of Nagoya.
We walked around the inside castle museum and made our way to the top of the castle observatory. From the top we could see the whole city. Quite a large looking city.
For some reason we were feeling really exhausted so we plodded back down to the subway and rode to a large temple where Yukata said he was married in a traditional style Japanese wedding. The temple grounds were quite new and the temples looked immaculate.
We then went back to the bullet train station for a Nagoya specialty meal of miso katsu and this unagi don that has 3 ways of being eaten: plain, with these little veggie toppings, and with this sort of light fish broth. You are given all the food for each type of style so we tried all 3 ways. My fav was with the soup and this unusual powdered seasoning that you spinkle in top from a little paddle.
Next we were off to Kyoto and arrived in the evening and checked into our hotel and fell asleep by 8pm for a much needed rest.
